All,

I wanted to share the letter I recently sent to the moderators concerning the influx of others using this site for their own pecuniary gain. This way others who support or oppose my viewpoint may use this thread, send their own letter or do both to express their viewpoint and perspective on the issue.

Obviously, the final decision would be the moderators.

Here is the letter:

I do understand that HOATalk is a free service. The forum is fantastic and is very much appreciated.

Discussions on the site cover many many topics. In the past it seemed that the topics covered architectural issues and records access. Lately, perhaps because of news coverage, the discussion has centered around assessments.

There have been great discussions on all the topics. It didn't matter if one agreed or disagreed with those others. The merits of the viewpoint and opinions offered were what was discussed.

For the most part the members of this forum are able to self moderate. This self moderation has usually been fairly successful when it deals with issues of respecting other posters perspective and keeping the language of the posts civil. However, self moderation has it's limits and cannot affect those members who joined the forum for purposes of pecuniary gain.

Unfortunately, it appears that the forum has started to have an influx of individuals who joined only for pecuniary gain and use the forum as a sales pitch for their product or service. As stated earlier, self moderation has little if any affect on dealing with this issue.

Even if the number of individuals appear low, it doesn't take many to ruin a forums reputation with it's members. Loss of reputation typically results in the loss of active members. Overtime, this simply kills the forum.

I understand that moderating this forum is likely a collateral duty for those working at Community 123. Unfortunately, only a moderator can resolve this issue.

It appears some old posts that were used for pecuniary gain in the past are being reactivated. Combine this with the newer posts and threads that are being used for pecuniary gain and it appears to be a site for sales pitches or beta testing a companies service rather than a place for community association leaders and volunteers, to discuss issues, share ideas and learn.

Yes, it could be argued that a sales pitch is a form of sharing ideas and learning, once that sales pitch identifies the company and blatantly violates the posting rules it becomes just that, a sales pitch.

Please have a moderator take some time and look at the posts previously reported and take appropriate action on those individuals/members and/or posts/thread. Please take the time to respond to those members who took the time to report so they know that some action was taken or, at the very least, that the member who reported the action can learn that they were mistaken.

Again this forum is a great service provided by Community123 and one that is badly needed.

Well said Tim... I do believe we do have a few "Snake oil" sales people amongst us. It is quite concerning to me as they have poisoned a few in the pond. I am sorry but no one has created a new way of collecting unpaid assessments by skirting the existing system. You can't get blood from a turnip or those who have filed bankruptsy or being foreclosed on. Your just selling people on an idea that doesn't exist or cost more than worth getting out of it.

Believe me, I've done the lien/foreclosure thing first hand. They are not money making propositions for any HOA. They are either hole fillers (liens) or Stop the bleeding methods (Foreclosures). There's no profit nor should there be a "profit" found when doing these solid proven methods. Your just getting back money that is already owed or getting rid of the people who just suck the money out. Get rid of the punishment mentality and into the reality mentality. That is sometimes you get paid by a broke SOBE and sometimes you don't. Either way, your rid of that broke SOBE. (Son of a Biscuit Eater I am from the south )

Please stop posting information that would promote another idea there is some kind of other pursuit of money by using your method. The LEGAL method has already been established and it's in the LAW books. Your doing anything outside of that your in it for profit or on the losing end of a pricy battle not worth fighting.

Well said.

Some violations are obvious to all but recently we have had a few posters "suck some in" when they went from informational to a sales pitch.

I say the best method is for we posters to report the violators. If enough report the same person, it should be a no brainer for the moderators.

Thanks for raising the concern.

BTW... I am glad I wasn't the only who noticed this. It made me back away from a few postings as it upset me a bit... We are here to help people and guide them through living in a HOA as it is quite frustrating. We don't sell people "aluminum foil" armor suits and tell them how shiny and new they look after selling it to them. We'd rather give you a few moves to combat than sell you the "Emporer's new clothes".

Please new posters or those who just like to "browse"... Notice the number of posting under a person's name. It most likely is the best clue as to who on here has your best interest at heart. You may not like their advice or attitude but you know they have a solid long term standing here with us. Never take advice on here as legal or pertaining to your state. Just do your due diligence before believing a website selling you on an idea to pursue a debt or legal advice. They may not have been caught yet to be reported. Thank you for being here and continue learning on your HOA journey...

This is an annymous chat room forum, nothing else.

Provided in the hopes to generate revenue for Community123.com. Nothing more.

All one has to so is re-join with a different name.

IP addresses are easily disguised.

By posting such disdain just encourages the very action some despise.

Make something 'illegal' only serves to make it more popular.

You are best served by just ignoring it rather that trying to contol it.

If it makes you feel so rightous by posting your 'letter' so be it.

You, like many before you, will eventually fade into obscurity.

While the Letter to the Moderator doesn't hurt anything, I can see through the blatant sales pitches. In fact, I think HOATalk's regular posters do a great job of discrediting "offensive" sales pitches, which hurts the poster's sales approach. If a free forum requires Community123 to expend personnel resources to monitor, the cost versus benefit of providing a forum may rise, raising questions as to the overall forum's viability. Tread lightly, but tread nonetheless.
