The recent NM "Homeowners Association Act" bill failed in the House. How can I find a list of HOAs in New Mexico? Does HOAs in New Mexico have a lobbyist?

It is best to keep your HOA issues "In-house". Learn how a HOA works and reading your own rules before seeking outside sources. There most likely is not a list of HOA's in the state nor a lobbyist. Why add more government to your HOA when it is designed to operated by your members in your HOA? There is no "They or Them in a HOA... It is ONLY YOU and your neighbors"...

Steve,

Typically the lobbing arm of COAs/HOAs is the Community Associations Institute (CAI). There are varying opinions if the CAI is on the side of the Association or the membership itself. Regardless of the opinion held, this appears to be the main lobbyist for COA/HOA legislation. There may be others.

Here is a link to their: NM Chapter

As for looking for other Associations within NM, since most Associations are incorporated trying searching "Association" or "homeowners" in NM Corporation Search page. (I used the "contains" function when I searched for names)

Hope this helps,

Tim

Steve:
Many Condo/HOA consumer advocates who feel CAI represents primarily managers, attorneys and service providers have formed their own lobbying group to represent condo unit owners and home owners. One such state is Maryland which has the Maryland Homeowners Association, www.marylandhomeownersassociation.info, an all-volunteer non-profit which both lobbies in the legislature and helps homeowners with specific issues. You might need to start a similar organization in your state.

Tim & Jeanne,

Thank you very much for your advice.

In 1963, New Mexico legislature passed the Apartment Ownership Act. It was later changed to the Building Unit Ownership Act; the Cooperative Association Act and now the Condominium Act. Nothing in these acts has anything to do with HOAs. For two years the NM legislative body has been trying to pass an act that pertains to just HOAs. It is time for the HOAs in NM to have their own act. Thanks again for your help. Steve

Steve as they say: Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. HOA legislation runs the gamut from rather banal to those of CA & FL which attempt to regulate everything. Even without specific HOA regulations, you still have NM non-profit statutes which regulate, you guessed it, non-profit corporations which most HOAs are.
