HOA Syndrome

I can see the ads now: Have you had issues with your HOA that make you uneasy? Has your association unfairly singled you out for a reason you don’t understand? If so, you may be suffering from HOA Syndrome.

19. Memory loss
20. Obsessive rumination
21. Temporal mandibular joint problems (TMJ) and/or grinding of teeth
22. Hyper-vigilance
23. Restlessness
24. Fear of losing one’s pet
25. Sexual dysfunction
26. General family conflict

That's funny, Glen. I'm pretty sure that I saw a very similar list where those symptoms can tell directors if they're burned out! Think it was a CAI pub.

Marlee, we know there are bad and incompetent Boards but they are in the minority when you look at the total number of HOAs. Most exist because the majority of homeowners would rather sit on their butt and let someone else carry the can. As long as they are left alone and the assessments stay reasonable, they could care less.

Then you have the whiners and complainers that find malfeasance in everything the Board does because they are smarter than the Board and if the Board would do what they wanted, when they wanted, then everything would be fine. There is also the group that is never happy no matter what, if you sh*t them a gold egg, instead of saying thank you, they would complain about the smell or that it wasn't the same size as everyone elses egg.

Oh, and since I've picked on non-Board members it's only fair to mention the Board members who have never read their CC&R's or their State HOA or non-profit laws and who doesn't have a clue how things are supposed to be done. Like the fellow in another post who is complaining because his fellow Board Members have called a Special Meeting to recall him. He freely admits that he only recently bothered to read the CC&R's and from his posts seems barely literate. His one claim to fame and his whole reason for being on the Board, he's a good complainer. Not that he can bring unity, not that he's fighting for anything specific but that he knows how to bitch. For his fellow Board members sake I hope he talks better than he writes.

The symptoms I posted which I took directly from the articles are quite frankly BRAVO SIERRA and although I read the articles as a more tongue in cheek poke at HOAs and the people that see themselves as picked on. We have people that post here that have genuine problems and we try to help them. Then we have the people who have violations up the ying-yang and suddenly the Board is picking on them because those covenants were meant for everyone else and how dare the Board for wanting them to stop something they have gotten away with for years.

Here's a clue for all of you wannabe HOA saviors, the reason your neighbors don't elect you to the HOA Board is less likely due to interference from the malevolent Board or MC but more likely because your neighbors recognize you are a incompetent gasbag. And yes they agree with you to your face but usually that is done in the hope that you'll shut up about it and talk about something else.

I have been on the Board, my husband has been on the Board.

We have a bad Board now. I won't go in to details...it is incompetent.

Replace them? OK...try to do it when they run an illegal election with proxies etc. etc. and do not follow by-laws..or statutes.

And.....then you have most members who don't want to get involved, don't understand, don't want to understand, don't want to take responsibility....Hey, they are retired!
Bad mix all around.

We have a board that does not want to give up control....for...what reason??

There are some of us that do give a damn...can I say that on this forum?
It's not all about the Board being right and the members being clueless.
