I would have shot the dog, much lower consequences.
It is kind of ironic that the dog apparently escaped unharmed. It was described as a pitbull. The shooter was described as being 75 years old. The news stories said one other on-going issue was that the now-deceased neighbors were quite noisy and someone commented on the noise the shooter will hear in prison where he will spend the rest of his life.
BTW, the place where this took place has been described in some reports as condos and in other reports as apartments.
Maybe, this guy should have done what my friend did when a neighbor's dog (some tiny Yorkie or something like it) had a tendency to piddle and poop in her front yard. One day, she saw a fresh pile of poo, and put it in a plastic bag. My friend then marched over to the neighbor's who lived three doors away, rang the doorbell and when the neighbor answered, my friend handed her a rather smelly bag, saying "you left this at my house this morning," and stormed off. The dog never piddle or pooped on my friend's yard.
So, it ain't about the dog, not matter what it is - it's about inconsiderate and irresponsible owners. The poo doesn't justify being gunned down, of course, but one has to ask if these folks might still be in the land of the living if they'd simply lowered their voices, turned down the TV and stero - and went to Petsmart or some other pet store and bought a damn pooper scooper.
The shooting is yet another sad commentary on these modern times. By resorting to using a gun, this guy will now spend the rest of his life in jail or plead insanity and spend the rest of his life alone because everyone will think he's a kook.
