Should it be the responsibility of the social committee to raise money for the HOA? Our board expects us to raise $1000 for the year.

I would think that is a rather unusual request. I hope they don't dissolve your Committee if you don't come up with the money. Perhaps they should consider raising the annual assessment or float out a special assessment if they need the money.

Has your committee written a charter that's board-approved? Or has the Board itself written you a charter that states what' expected of you? ? If so, what does the charter say? If there's no charter, the board can direct you to do whatever it wishes. We really value our social committee here and wouldn't ask them to do anything like raising money for fear they'd say something like, um:" The heck with you!" And simply disband.

If you board, though, doesn't value your contributions and want to get rid of you, assigning you an unpleasant task is one way to do it.

I for one would not a social committee costing the HOA money and if they can make us some, power to them for doing a good job.

Could it be that the Social Committee is expected to raise funds for whatever functions or events that it plans?

We already charge for our functions -- enough to pay for each event. The HOA wants us to raise $1000 for them.

Most peculiar. Can't think why anyone would want to serve on that committee.

On second thought, why not all the Committees, the more the merrier.

Our community has a "social committee," but it is not responsible to the BOD in any fashion. Social activities are not the responsibility of our governing board, which per our charter, exists for the administration of the common elements only. Our social committee is made up of community volunteers and neither receives funds from association dues, nor is it responsible for raising funds for items budgeted as association expenses.

People are missing the tax ramifications of this money. A HOA is to be ONLY funded by it's members for it's members but through the collection of dues. If your HOA has "yard/bake" sales to raise money, then that money can be subjected to taxation. Your committee can raise it's own funds to cover it's expenses but not contribute money into the HOA's funds. Unless they are charging for renting of a facility for the events.

Claudia, again: does the Soc. comm have a charter? Does it say that you must raise money?

Our Soc comm has a charter and a budget. As noted earlier, we'd never ask them to try to raise money as I'm certain they'd all resign in a heartbeat.
