Live in a leased land community with a HOA association. Joining HOA is voluntary -- 50 per cent belong. We have a social committee with 2 events per month that are open to all residents. Board members never attend our events. Am I wrong in thinking that perhaps their participation would enhance the HOA and encourage more participation in the HOA?

I doubt it. To me two events a month is too many. But then I don't live in your community.
We have a dinner committee and a social committee. One month we have a catered dinner. Each person pays for their own dinner.
On the months we don't have a dinner we have entertainment. Diffierent entertainers perform for us. We take a free will offering to pay the entertainers.
We had an event Monday October 1, 2012 and only had eleven attend. This encluded two Board members.
I am thinking of posting a personal invitation on each owners door ( I am the entertainment chairperson)

Probably, as your HOA is voluntary and assuming all the owners know it exists your existing membership is probably just about where it is going to end up.
