Jon,

No doubt a board member exposes themselves to some risk, but it's not significantly greater than the risk of seeing a movie, shopping at a mall, or visiting the Empire State Building.

It's a dangerous world out there, but that shouldn't keep people from volunteering for their HOA.

And the probability of being shot while working as a taxi driver or convenience store clerk is huge compared to the activities that Lawrence mentioned

I have been physically attacked and chased down a road in my HOA. I can't repeat the names I have been called but have been compared to "Hitler"...That was all while serving as President and more. Just have to take it with a grain of salt and act mature and saner than the other people...

You take a risk whether you live in a HOA or not. Anyone can have a "crazy" neighbor who is going to do what they are going to do. A HOA may exasperate the situation but not always the cause. I have fought with my neighbor for years and we are NOT in a HOA. I've been more threatened by him than any of my HOA members.

It is just a sad situation and one that most likely could have been prevented with a bit of HOA eduction...

To paraphrase Forest Gump: Crazy is as crazy does. When I was growing up in (gasp) a non-HOA community, we had a neighbor everyone referred to as Crazy Joe. He was a menace to the community but was also crazy like a fox, in that he never made threats where there were witnesses. Until the day he held a friend of mine and his dad at gunpoint (shotgun) wanting to make a citizens arrest for illegal dumping. That was the day Crazy Joe was finally committed.

Point is there is nowhere 100% safe, nor any job 100% safe.

Studies show that 5 out of 4 people have problems with fractions

Just think, he didn't adjust well to HOA life, he will really, really hate prison. The guards and other prisoners will definitely teach him humility. I cant think of a better place for him.
