I have a homeowner, who was the former president for many years, who has posted signs on their vehicle
that says the .......HOA SUCKS, what do you do with such a person?. It is not against the bylaws because it is
not a commercial sign? We are a small and wonderful community their is always one bad apple in the bunch.
I find is funny and sad at the same time, this family has multiple issues in the community with their
children and I am concerned along with others that their is a mental breakdown or they may go postal
one day. I prefer to ignore it but some homeowners say it has gone too far and can and may get worse.

Ignore him. Although in bad taste, this is america, and is covered under free speech.

Penny,

Typically the more attention you give a complainer, the individual learns that complaining is the way to get things done. As posted, every Association has one. Yours' just seems to be taking it to the extreme.

If your concerned about safety - contact the police.

If they cause a nuisance at a meeting - ask them to leave. If they refuse, have them removed by the police

As for any legitimate complaints, you should respond to them as you would with any other owner.

If they wish to voice personal opinions - this is their right.

If they slander anyone with their personal opinions - the individual who was slandered (not the Association) should contact an attorney to seek out legal options.

I'd say it's okay to vent through a bumper sticker...It's my American right to do so. It means if someone sees it and asks about it, then that person can vent on them and the other reqret ever asking...Venting is NOT killing...It's a personal opinion...

I am an ex president of a HOA and after the experience it can indeed leave a sour taste in your mouth. For years I still got phone calls as if I was still president. I now live somewhere else and don't even live there anymore! The sight of "Pink Flamingo's" still sends me into fits of laughter when I see them...Would I even live in another HOA?...Sure...I have nothing against HOA's at all.

It may be the perception of what one reads into the bumper sticker that is the issue. My bother reads the bumper sticker that says "Crap happens" as meaning something negative. (I censored it). He thinks that it means nothing good ever happens. As most of us know it just means "Stuff happens" and not necessarily a negative thing at all. Just the facts. This just someone's opinion who wants to put it out there in a passive aggressive way...Just don't ever stop them to ask questions about it...You don't want the earful... If there are signs of taking things "Postal" then call the cops. Trying to cut off this person's venting will just make things worse...It's a cop thing when stuff starts blowing up...

Penny,

Ignore him. If you complain, he'll know he got to you which is exactly what he wants. It's a question of who wears out first - him or you. Don't let it be you.

I Believe you are both right, this person is desperate for attention!
It saddens me and then I do ignore it, but you hear so many stories on the
news with neighbors coming out and shootings etc....

Those are just stories and urban myths the media perpetuates into a concious...Let me tell you a story about a place I used to live...It was a good quiet type neighborhood. Pretty much stayed under the radar type of place although near many big attractions in town. In the 5 or 7 years I lived there, there were atleast 3 murders. One victim lived directly across the street from me and was murdered just a few hundred yards down the road. The media trucks parked in my parking space to do their "Live" reports on the story. A few months after I left, there was a drive by shooting at my apartment complex that got the two aparments next to mine. No one injured.

Now I am sure your thinking "Right quiet neighborhood maybe in the HOOD!". Not the case at all. The murders that happened all involved people the victims knew personally. They weren't a threat on society as a whole. Just directly to that person. The drive by shooting was because the people who lived in those apartments taunted the people across the street.

You have to treat these type of situations as case by case. It is not an individualized situation here your dealing with. This person just has an overall grievance after their HOA experience. If this person violates the law, then you have a right to be concerned. However, stating openly they don't like HOA's as a whole just makes them kind of the whack job to deal with not live in fear with... I've dealt with crazy before and sure will do it again...

I don't believe the HOA could craft by-laws or covenants regulating signs on or in a person's car. I swear there was a court case published on this website a year or two ago that mentioned something along those lines.

Gone too far???

When I was a teen I had a bumper sticker that read: "Disco Sucks".

I did not have a mental breakdown or 'go postal' or "get worse".

It's his/her opinion. I too at times think HOA(s) Suck.

I too think it Sucks (HOAs) at times, but you nor does anyone do not know the situation
and issues (past ones). I am not say they cannot have an opinion. This couple in question
is very disturbing with other issues that I cannot reveal on this post
so, when I say gone to far this is part of a long long long history and list
of crap they try to pull. That is all I have to say, I thank everyone for their feedback
