We have a DVR and camera system that records 24/7 and at night it sends alerts if the pool deck area is breached. As part of the that system, we have a wireless Modem and we'd like to open it up to the residents at the pool so they can have internet access while their are at the pool. It's encrypted with a password, but we're concerned about possible abuses and improper content. Do we need to have the pool guests sign an agreement form and then give them credentials to the network. Any other thoughts?

Look at OpenDNS.com. It's free and you can set your router DNS to OpenDNS and turn on filters to block inappropriate sites. Easy, fast and free. Nothing is 100% with blocking but it's a good start. Be sure to block proxy sites as well all the other objectionable ones.

Yep, people are going to look up porn. Its human nature. Personally, I don't care what people browse on the internet.

But people may start buying high powered antennas, canceling internet and just use the pool's wifi. I already know people who do this. I dont have an issue with that either. Just letting you know.

That's a concern with all the kids running around and it looks like Open.dns will solve that problem.

Many of the communities in our area now have wifi - I was just curious as to how it's working out in some of these other areas.

I've used opendns for many, many years. It will help, but it wont solve the problem. There are many ways around it and it doesn't block every site. New porn sites are created daily. Teens are very clever, you cant stop them.

Remember the members are paying for this service. Why the need to act like a nanny?

Network operators are not responsible for the actions of the users. Do you ever hear of Comcast, Verizon, etc. being in any way held liable for people downloading/distributing child porn?

Parents are always responsible for their minor offsprings actions so again the HOA is not.

If you say you are going to protect everyone from this or that what happens when something 'gets by'? Now you may be liable.

Save yourself alot of aggrivation and administration efforts trying to keep up with a 'moving target' and just state that the user is responsible for anything they do on the community network when the password is given out.

Even a password may be a waste of time if the node is within the interior of the community.
