Does the VP take over the president 's position on the board when the president resigns?

Typically, the VP performs the duties of the President when the President is unavailable or the position is vacant.
The VP will continue to perform those duties until the Board appoints a new President. I've usually seen the Board appoint the VP to the Presidents position and leave the VP position vacant.

According to standard parliamentary procedure, upon the resignation of the president the vice-president becomes president, However, your governing documents may specify otherwise.

Also, since in the majority of cases all officers serve at the pleasure of the board, it is conceivable that the board could appoint a new president, or a whole new slate of officers.
