We have a neighborhood website but we are considering starting an neighborhood hoa page to help with communications. Out of 320 homeowners and typically average only between 3-7 households visiting the website per day.

Just wondering if other HOA’s use Facebook? If you do I have a few questions:
1) Do you have a group page or a fan page? (I believe group pages are no longer supported)
2) Is it open to the public? Or just members? I’m thinking that if we have one open to the public we can drive homeowners to our website for private matters.
3) How do you handle if homeowner is in bad standing? We block website access, should we block Facebook access as well?

Thanks.

We have both HOA page and a FB page. At first the FB page was good, but I suggest to NOT do one. All we have is fighting, people being ignorant, lies, etc. if you DO make one, make it private and let it be known there will be no toleration for asinine behavior. Remove obnoxious and rude, mean posts immediately too. We have had so many people leave our FB page because of those problems. REALLY not a good idea to start one up in my opinion! Good luck in whatever you decide!

Just turn off comments and use it to inform homeowners of information.

That's an awesome idea! I will have to look and see where that is on the page! No more fighting and stupidity wouldbe wonderful!

LOL, we was just talking about a website, and how a Facebook page will be cheaper. We need to inform the community, and posting our very OWN Newsletter on Facebook would be neat. Of course, there will always be trouble makers. I guess we can deal with that when the time comes.

As an HOA member of a moderate income subdivision, I established a facebook page as well as a facebook public page for members to have a voice.

The agent for my HOA is threatening to restrain the continuance of the pages via judicial order.

The pages are fact driven and include an affiliation disclaimer with our HOA and its agent.

Chances are, if an HOA does not establish a facebook page, then a page established by a member or members may be established eventually and it could be for the purpose of providing members who live in fear a place to have a voice.

Thus far, our civil liberty for freedom of expression online has not been compromised and if I were a decision maker for an HOA, I would get a facebook page up right away to promote connectivity amongst members and to have control over what is allowed to remain posted.

I view facebook pages to be a helpful areas for communication which is important in establishing trust with members as well as maintaining it.

It reminds me of the accountability measure brought about by email in the work place too.

Interesting enough I did a search on a large (+2,000) neighborhood in our area and they have 4 facebook pages, only one of which is controlled by the HOA. One of the pages is titled HotMomsof[neighborhood name]. Anyone can set up a face page – you do not have to be the owner. Example the Coca-cola facebook page (34 million fans) was set up by two people who does not work for coke but are fans.
