Don't confuse a gated area with a security system. A gated area will reduce the traffic on your private streets. It will keep out the average honest passer by who likes to obey the rules.

It will not keep out the jerks who think "rules are not made for me" as they will just wait and tail gate in. Hundreds of people will have the gate codes and be able to get in.

Theives who want to get in can climb over a neighbors fence.

So think of gates as "semi-privacy gates" that will reduce the traffic on your streets somewhat.

A guard at the gate will reduce the tail gating in, but will not stop the professional or determined theives.

Security patrols may be somewhat of a deterrent, but they only patrol one, two or three times per night, depending on your budget, and theives only have to watch for them to come and go, then go into action.

Cameras can be a pretty good security deterrent, and set up properly can catch theives in action, and the film can be use in court.

I suggest you consult with some local security companies to learn first hand about all the types of security available.

Hi! I was worried about the same thing in my gated community.

In my research, I have discovered a Visitor Management solution that prevents the "pseudo" security provided by electronic gates. I found a company that allows residents to create temporary codes for visitors that are immediately eliminated from the database after the specified time of arrival. It also creates a recorded history of all the traffic transaction as a result so if something does happen within the community, authorities can look at the time of the event and have detailed information on what visitors entered the community at that time.

Im going to look into this solution more, let me know if you would like the information!
