We really don't have a good method of allowing people who want
to serve the ability to "get their name out there." Believe it or
not, here's how our voting works:

Around November, our management company sends out a notice of the annual
meeting. Within that mailing is a form that you're asked to fill out if
you're interested in running for the board. You fill it out and mail it
back to the management company. Where's the logic in that? I don't know,
because no one has a clue who's running and what their experience is. Sure,
people can stand up at the annual meeting and give their speech, but I think
something better should be in place.

How do people in your community "get their name out there" to run for the board?

thanks.... Steve

About 3 months before our annual meeting, we place a notice in our newsletter that elections are coming up, how many positions will need to be voted on, and we invite prospective candidates to come to a "board information night" that will be held about 2 months prior to election. Board members will also call people who appeared to have shown interest in being involved, or people we believe would be willing to serve, and we invite them to come to the information night. The loudest and most frequent complainers are also invited, as well as the micromanagers. (It's put up or shut up time). We have also had the PM mail notices and invitations to the entire community.

The board attends the information night and each board member desribes what it's like to be on the board, what the responsibilities are, and what his or her job as an officer is. Those attending are also invited to ask questions. Everyone attending is invited to submit their name to the PM if they are interested in running. The PM places the names of those who desire to run on the ballot, and those individuals will be the first ones nominated from the floor at the annual meeting. Others may also be nominated from the floor at that time.
