Our HOA in Florida has given a recognition luncheon each year for the last 2 years to residents who have volunteered within the community, whether on a Committee, a Block Captain, etc., as a way of saying "thank you". Does anyone know of anything in the Statutes that forbid using HOA funds to host something like this? There is nothing in our Docs. Thanks.

If there's nothing in your docs against it, I think it sounds like a marvelous idea. Everyone enjoys being appreciated for their efforts.

You will not find anything in Chapter 720. We used to have a small ‘recognition fund’ approved at the annual meeting and no one has ever challenged it. We did not do lunches but gave out a few gift certificates to those who helped especially after the hurricanes. Either way, I think it is a good thing as long as the membership agrees.

This year our HOA board budgeted $2500 for a recognition event. We are a fairly large community with a $2M a year budget and a large corps of volunteers. We held a very nice cocktail party with catered food, and a 3 piece jazz group. This was followed by a ceremony presenting certificates of appreciation to the various groups and a photo montage presentation put together by the clubhouse staff.

This event was very well received by the community and I expect that it will become a regular event held every few years.

Sounds a bit pricey, but if your membership is OK with it and as long as you stay within the IRS's 90/10 percent expenditure rule, it sounds like a very nice way to thank your volunteers.
