our first fl stinks

An owner complained to another Board member and myself about a problem on the first fl. There was some white things on the carpet and a wet spot. I heard that someone in our building dropped something, I don't know what. Anyway this owner said she couldn't breathe. At the time, I couldn't smell anything unusual, but since that time when I walk throught the first fl, it smells horrible. Does anyone have any idea of what this could be and how it can be remedied.
The housekeeping people came the day after the owner complained to me and cleaned it up. It looks better but stinks worse.
