Committees.. HOA's would be lost without them.

Our community is not unlike anyone else's. Lots of apathy.

One homeowner volunteers for a committee and is reeled in with a phone call to a board member. Other's who are not so desirable are asked to inquiry for social committee during board sessions.. it fairly obvious to those who are watching.. Our ccrs.. do not ask for spec on committees..

What is the norm for other HOA's.

We have a sign up sheet at each general meeting.
We ask people individually.
We ask for help in our newsletter

Those are the standard things we do.

I've heard of other Boards who also tried:

Banging their head on the wall

What ever works. We haven't turned down a volunteer yet.

We solicit committee volunteers at board meetings, in our quarterly newsletter and directly (by committee chairmen asking specific individuals if they would volunteer.

There is a volunteer form on the website and available at the front desk. When a volunteer form is received, it is given to the Board member who is the liaison to the relevant committee who consults with the committee chairman to determine if the candidate is acceptable. If so, the board appoints the individual at the next board meeting.

Sometimes committee members are solicited, asked to be on the committee by a board member or president.

Other times the person volunteers to be on a committee that interests him/her.

It does not matter HOW they got on the committee, it's how they act.
