I just became the VP of our HOA. We are taking over for someone who was the president for 20+ years. We've (the Board) has just found out that we are behind in filing state taxes for our HOA. The accountant we hired said he needs our California State Tax ID # in order to do this for us.

I am pretty sure that the HOA did file taxes prior to 2008. We owe 2008, 2009 and 2010 and want to send them in asap.

How can we find out our Tax ID# without arousing too much suspicion from the State Tax Board? I've looked online and in our "leftover" paperwork from the prior president and can't find anything.

My understanding is that as a non-profit, we aren't earning income (our earnings approx. = our expenditures) so we probably won't owe any $ to the State of California unless they charge us penalties for late filing.

Ideas on how to find this ID#? Thanks.

To find your ID, locate your copies of previous filings and look there. You should also be able to send a request to the tax office. Just tell them that you are verifying the number because records are incomplete.

As a non-profit you do earn income. Typically it's in the form of interest from bank accounts or dividends on investments. You will need to check with your State to see if fines are considered income as usually only the Annual and Special assessments are excluded as income.

There would be a Federal EIN number that was issued to your HOA and referenced by number on any of your IRS communications and also on your IRS Determination letter.

Does CA also issue a State ID number?

Are you thinking of the sales tax number?

Maybe they do things differently in CA.
