Our property managment company tells me that every post to the website by a resident has to be approved by the board.

Sometimes it takes a week or more for board approval, sometimes board memebrs don't respond at all. By the time we get bpoard approval, things like crime reports or announcements of public meetings are outdated.

How does your HOAs information along to the community? Do all posts to the websites have to be approved byt the board.

I'm interested in hearing your comments.

Our website consists of two parts, one is the "official" HOA / board part, where the board or committees post official HOA news, minutes of meetings etc. The other part is a discussion forum / classifieds / service recommendations for handymen or service companies etc. There, residents can post without board approval, but one needs to be logged onto the website, the name is automatically posted with the message, and only authorized users can post. With that I mean there can be no anonymous posts or bogus accounts, all residents can have their own accounts, but no non-HOA member would be able to post or get a user account.

To me it all depends on what the purpose of the website is. If it is purely for official HOA business, then yes I would agree the board needs to approve everything. If there is also a social component like with our website for discussions beyond HOA business, then I wouldn't understand why the board would need to approve. After all, it is clear that on a discussion forum the message always reflects the opinion of the message poster, not all HOA members.

We had community123.com build our community website (to your left on this screen)several years ago. They set it up for the use of all our homeowners for announcements to be posted by the board of directors, and for a suggestion area, and contact site for homeowner interaction.
Homeowners can access any document they desire, and for example, instead of paying (we would have to pay over $200.00)for a resale package when you sell your home, you can download it for free on our website.
We could not be happier. It fills the needs for anything a community web site would want, and then some.

When they built our site we paid nothing for two months, and by then we had over 40 + homeowners registered out of 167. Now everyone is registered, except of course the very few who do not have a computer.

Good Luck:

1. Setup a FREE forum at www.freeforums.org under an anonymous name
2. Put up flyers for everyone to see, or put a flyer on every car windshield.
3. Let people post whatever they want

Problem solved.

Ellen,

We have specific items on our site that must be approved by the Board prior to being placed on the site.

Additionally, we have a forum on the site were members and residents may post as they wish, when they wish. This is also how we comply with VA law ยง 55-510.2 which says:

The board of directors shall establish a reasonable, effective, and free method, appropriate to the size and nature of the association, for lot owners to communicate among themselves and with the board of directors regarding any matter concerning the association.

Prior to being elected to the Board, I actually fought for having the forum and finally volunteered to oversee the Website if the board authorized it. I believe it was the fact that I volunteered to do the work that tipped the scale in having it approved. It actually turned out that the previous person overseeing the site didn't know how to add the feature of a forum.
