At a Board meeting I recently attended I heard the President make the motion to adjourn the meeting. I have never witnessed this before; adjournment has always been from another Director. I have checked through Roberts' Rules and Florida 720 to see if this is allowed. Your help is appreciated. I intend to attend another meeting of this Association on Monday and would like to be able to correct them before they continue doing something which is not legal. Thanks to all. I have been away from HOA Talk, but now I am back and ready to get active.

Judy,

Who ever is heading the meeting does the adjourning. There is no problem with the president doing it. You said that you checked R.Rs but you did not say what you found.

Judy,

Copied below is from a Roberts Rules general meeting.

"President: If there is no objection, the meeting will now adjourn. [Pause to look around the room.]

There are still five things that members can do before the meeting adjourns, which are explained in Chapter 8 under "Adjourn."

President: Since there is no objection, the meeting is adjourned. [one rap of the gavel]

Hi Judy,

The constraints on the chair are less in committees and small boards.

RONR [10th ed.], p. 470-71; 483, l. 10-19

HTH

Ann

PS... The chair (in a board meeting or general meeting of more than 12 members) may "assume a motion" utilizing the language Donna addresses in her reply. An example (other than adjournment) would be if a committee report is received which has recommendations. If the committee does not "move to accept the recommendation", the presiding officer could "assume a motion" thereby expediting the meeting.

Our ByLaws state the President presides over the meetings. So there is no problem with him/her making a/the motion to adjourn.

I'm impressed that the adjournment was in the form of a motion. I basically end my meetings with:

Anything else? (no reply or negative replies)
OK, we're done.

Yup - no motion needed.

"There being no other business before the board, the meeting is adjourned'

As president of our Board, at the conclusion of agenda items, I always say: "Do I hear a motion to adjourn?". If there is no further business, another Board member will make the motion, at which time I adjourn the meeting.
