All, I know the owner of this site sells websites, but our HOA just started using a free Facebook/iphone app called HomeElephant. It really is an easy tool for the homeowners to adopt (they can access it inside Facebook), and we have never had the involvement level as we do now. Just thought I'd share it with you.

Jim,

I did look at the application: http://www.crunchbase.com/company/homeelephant

It has potential but also has the same drawbacks a website, twitter, etc. does. Members must be willing to participate.

Personally, I prefer face to face communications vs. facebook, twitter, etc. Therefore, the application could be the greatest thing since sliced bread - but it's not for me.

A cup of coffee on the front stoop/porch waving and saying hello to the neighbors, perhaps a neighborhood BBQ once or twice a year, is more along my methodology to know your neighbors.

Hi Jim:

I am a web design, programmer, internet guru and I can understand that this would be a good tool for many HOA’s most especially a larger HOA. I would have no issue with what I have seen with regards to the available tools to recommend for any HOA as it appears simple to use, supposedly protects individual HOA information, etc.

However, having said that I am in a smaller HOA and I also agree with Tim in that I cannot begin to count the number of times I have knocked on a neighbors door to discuss an issue, or was also drinking a cup of coffee on the front porch, or pulling weeds and having certain discussions with neighbors.

Being in a smaller HOA I would like to keep the one-on-one atmosphere we currently have going as I believe it makes for a closer knit group. However, should that change in the future I will definitely keep this option in mind as a recommendation for our HOA.

Again … in a larger HOA or in an association in which members are not involved, I can see where this would absolutely potentially increase involvement.
