How do you handle this situation?

We have two board members who loudly swear and accuse other board members (oficers) of lying about everything. One of these people lost a litigated architectural case a couple years ago,so he's just serving on the board to be disruptive. Last meeting he and his friend (other board member) became so disruptive we had to cancel the meeting and didn't get anything done. The verbal abuse is inexcusable and has been getting worse each meeting so we are seeking info on how to handle this. We can't dismiss them because they were elected by the members and have 1 year left to serve. Is there a "code of conduct" we can reference that would allow us to bar them from a board meeting or give us ammunition to have them removed from the board? Any suggestions?

sure you can dismiss them.

set the expectation at the meeting, right up front, that it will be done civilly. Issue ONE warning. THen, escort the offender out of the meeting at the second offense.

It would also help to contact the county sheriff, and see what the cost would be to have an off duty deputy present. Tell them the truth, you are having a meeting, but expect trouble, and would like law enforcement to be there to stop it before it escalates. It may cost you a few bucks, but i bet the presence of a sheriff standing in the corner will calm them down.

David, have the Board establish 'Rules of Conduct for Meetings'. Include a statement that any disruptive member will be automatically excused from the meeting after one warning. They shall leave immediately and failure to do so will result in a fine and other sanctions as determined by the Board.

Or, you can do it Roger's way. His is more civil, mine involves guns and stuff.

Your choice.

David:

If he is disruptive and abusive at a meeting as a president and chair of the meeting I would ask him to calm down or excuse himself from the meeting so we can conduct business. If he refuses and continues on the behavior I would call the police and he could look at a disorderly conduct charge.
