John,

The best suggestion I can offer is for you to approach all of your neighbors, in person or in writing, and ask that if they ever have an issue with you, your family or your pets to feel free to contact you about it so you can address the problem.

Don't get into someone reported my dog and it my dog wasn't making the noise.

Just politely ask that they contact you directly so you can fix the problem quickly.

The goal is to stop any future complaints from happening.

Hi John:

Tim offers very good advice here ... and which is what I followed in the past.

I feel for you because I have been there. A neighbor in another subdivision thought one of my dogs was barking supposedly non-stop. The first clue it was not one of my dogs is at the time I had four dogs, if one barks they all bark. Plus unless someone is trespassing my dogs usually do not bark.

I politely spoke with the neighbors and the consensus was the dogs rarely barked if at all, but they all knew who potentially reported because of having past experiences with this individual. So I knocked on that door and politely asked … they admitted they were the ones who reported. I politely explained that it was not one of my dogs and why. I then gave them my home and cell telephone numbers and asked in the future if they believed my dogs were barking, to please feel free to call me.

After a couple of calls and they realized they were barking up the wrong tree themselves it all stopped. It is important to be very polite if they call. You want them to call you not the HOA or local authorities, which they will do if you get nasty when they complain. Get a note or affidavit from your witness so you have it in the future. Keep good notes at this time of when you are home and when you are gone, and whether you checked with neighbors after returning to see if the dog barked. Another option I was getting ready to utilize if it had continued is digital recording.
