We are planning an orientation meeting for our homeowners association Board Directors and any interested residents (potential future board members). We have an 8 member board with 5 being new members in January/February. I am looking for a list of topics. All suggestions are welcomed!

Hi Ruth:

You have 5 new members so one of the most important is they should familiarize themselves with not only the HOA documents, but also the Florida State Statutes regarding HOA & Non-Profit Corporations:

Florida Statutes,(both 720 and corporate), our Homeowners' Declarations, Articles, and Bylaws are already the beginning items for our orientation meeting. Looking for other possible topics.

Thanks

Community Association Institute (CAI) puts out a "Board Member Toolkit". I can send a link if you like.

Remember this...

This is something that my BOD has forgotten, and other HOA may not understand.

Use your committees and other people wanting to help out. Committees are formed to make the workload smaller for the BOD. Don't minimize what your committes can do. If you communicate with the HO in your neighborhood, and simply ask what they think, you will see a better overall community togetherness.

These are the issues we are dealing with in my neighborhood. My BOD is not talking to anyone about what is going on, and not useing any of the committee and making the committees feel worthless. When this happens, people dont want to help.

Yes; I have said here many times: the commmittees feed the board. Those are the best candidates to fill board positions in the future. Strong committees!!!
