What are the pitfalls of hiring a man who is an owner or the husband of an owner of a
condo unitto perform handyman hourly work at the complex? The one Board member who
would be controlling this individual would be living in another state and it would only
be the word of the handyman as to what he did, hours spent, etc.

If nobody is watching his work, and nobody's keeping track, then how will you know how much you owe him? And what about worker's compensation and liability insurance? Withholding? Payroll taxes?

To me it sounds like you need to rethink it.

The process of hiring one employee can be rather simple. Especially versus using a contractor or private company. It might even give you a chance to save some money.

Many payroll companies exist that could handle the accounting and check preparation for you.

Insurnace for one employee can be found rather cheaply.

Your one concern as to who would direct this employee is not limited to this type of person but anyone you hire for this service. If no one from the Board keeps tabs on them how do you check the hours or time they work or for that mattyer what they do or needs to be done?

What do you now pay someone to perform work on your property? Who directs their work? Who makes sure they have done the work requested in an acceptable manner? And why would you arrange to have an out of state Board member serve in that capacity?
