i am the on the board of an HOA in new york. the board has had a bad history of lousey politics which has resulted in large financial expendatures which benefitted about 10% of the community directly (including 4 directors), three years of financial mismanagement, illegal gambling on site, etc.

in the last week, one of our residents sent a postcard anonimously to all residents(just prior to our upcoming election) to expose the negative dealings with a board member, who is also a local cop who has been known to harass folks that he doen't like. the cop flipped and accused anyone and everyone, began an investigation using his law enforcement powers and has made numerous threats in general to the author of the postcard (when he finds out who it is).

on a board of 7, 3 people are up for election. 1 of the members re-running resigned over the never ending political struggles, another member has decided not to re-run for the same reasons, leaving only the exposed boards member who flipped. only 2 additional candidates are running, meaning they and the exposed guy are instant winners. 1 additional board member resigned after an personal issue that became very public.

of the 5 directors left, 3 are "old boys club" type and wield the powers without concern. myself and the 1 who has decided not to run.

big story just to set the background, i know. the question: in a community that is mostly appathetic, how can i get folks the info that i have, which should create a huge backlash against activities of the old boys club that are not beneficial to the HOA? i can not send a flyer out, someone will get killed! i would resign, but i think that would allow these guys to create further plundering and harassment.

thanks

Sounds like you have the makings of a fine TV drama.

a. Report the illegal gambling as you are probably legally bound to do that if you know about it, otherwise you may be seen as an accessory. You may even want to see if your CC&Rs cover ethics violations for those GOBs you have remaining. If they're dirty without looking too hard, they're probably more dirty than you know. They'll self destruct given the right amount of accupressure.

b. As for the cop, whoever witnessed them making verbal threats might want to make a complaint to that precinct or agency and your flip-out guy will calm down, quickly. Those who can't make mortgage payments are big targets, not target shooters.

c. I'd do a postcard campaign like your "Deep Throat" did. That's nice and stealthy. Just don't leave any DNA or fingerprints on those cards and mail them from NJ.

d. A nice audit might be in order to uncover those "perks" the 10% got.

Now all you have to do is figure out Season Two of your TV drama and what to wear to the Golden Globes.

Once I was on a board of 5 where the other four were running their own backroom politics and abusing their powers. They were arrogant and talked down to owners who questioned them. My response was to speak to my neighbors about this and ask them to attend a board meeting to observe for themselves. When they were scolded for asking questions or accused of butting in the owners were quick to tell their friends.

There were other improprieties as well and with all that was going on I held private meetings with owners in my home and other homes, with neighbors invited ot come and ask questions about what was happening. We then created petitions for a special meeting for purpose of having the members recalled. It was successful. If neighbor after neighbor ignores your story then remind them if they don't step up, they get what they deserve. You can't do it alone. OThers have to care about their neighborhood.

Wow, I know it was long ago, but this could be describing my POA on LI too. What is it with Long Island? Corruption rules. I am curious as to what happened to Kevin. I know our board is still pocketing most of the dues money for private parties, friday night booze parties, kiddie parties, card games (!?) etc. I wonder if Kevin is a neighbor. If I ever buy again, there is no way I would get involved with a POA, HOA - they bite.
