My FL HOA has a board election coming up, to elect three out of five members whose terms are expiring - and no one has filed to run for office.

There's nothing in our documents about how to proceed. In the past one unfilled position was filled at the annual meeting by write in votes. But now a member of my board wants to have people indicate their interest in being write in candidates and have a candidates night before the ballots have to be sent in. I'm new at this, but I don't sense that this is how write in elections are usually conducted.

Opinions or advice, please?

It would be nice idea. However, you should consider nominations from the floor of the meeting this sometimes gets enough people.

If there are still vacancies, then whom ever is elected to the Board would have the power to appoint someone to the seat (expecting your governing documents allow this).

The other option is to petition the court to have the Association go into receivership until enough volunteers come forward.
