Dear HOATalk

I recgonize the need to reorganize after an election with new board members elected. In our case we recently have had a vacancy (the President) so they appointed another member to the five member board.

Does that mean they need to reorganize again? In our case the present treasurer has been very active, and good. I would hate to see her leave that position. She also would like to stay on as treasurer. However she has been holding their feet to the fire as far as expenditures and the rest of the board dosn't like that. Can they make her change her treasurer's position?

The board usually chooses the Association's officers, so if your current treasurer isn't selected again, that's their choice. However, serving as treasurer isn't easy - the board may not like what your current one is doing, but if she knows her stuff, I suspect they respect that deep down and won't replace her (who else has the guts to take on the job?)

Nancy,

Any time that a Board needs to reorganize the Officer positions, does it not make great sense to assign a financial brain to be Treasurer? A good leader should be president and someone with attention to details should be Secretary. Dispite some of the others not appreciating what her system has meant positively to your Board, be prepaired to mention her greatness at the meeting and work to keep her as Treasurer.

Nancy,

If there is a vacancy during the year and the board appoints a member to fill the position, it makes sense to reorganize the board positions especially if the person appointed does not fit the vacant seat. Reorganization does not have to happen only after an election, it can happen at any time during the year if a majority of the board feels some positions should be shuffled around.

Regarding your treasurer, it would not be very productive to replace her with someone less qualified. Hopefully the board members will be adult enough to realize that she is doing what is best for the assn by "holding their feet to the fire". I'm sure you'll do your best to convince them of this.

Good treasurers are very hard to come by. I recommend having someone else step up as President than the treasurer. If no one wants to step up as President and take an active roll, hopefully, there are two people (President and Vice President) can split all the active duty rolls. I have several associations set up this way.
