I feel like I always have to be the bad guy when it come to enforcement of the rules in our neighborhood. I know my fellow board members have full time jobs and do not as much times as I do, however, it's always me doing the dirty work. It's a lonely feeling and I don't like it. I have asked both of them to help, but it never ends up happening..

How can I inspire my fellow board members to help out?

Hi Sharon:

That is difficult as you stated if both work then they may not have as much time. One idea is for you all to try and meet once per week ... even if just for a few minutes ... to at least get all board members to review and sign any letters regarding enforcement of the rules. This way you may be the individual who draws up the letters and delivers; however, you will not be alone as the only person signing. I myself periodically get that same lonely feeling, but then others will out of the blue send a thank you email or something and it picks me back up.

No ONE person on the board should feel pressure because rules are not enforced.

Rules and documents should be very clear and written procedures should be followed by whomever is given the task. (treasurer, usually, who will send the invoices)

Okay so now I am super pissed off!!! I recently called the tow truck on some illegally parked cars. Now half of the neighborhood hates me! I know this is part of the job, however, ITS ALWAYS ME! The other two do not enforce the rules so I look like the jerk all the time! People are posting stuff on facebook and telling kids to egg my house. Our neighborhood has some major parking issues and extremely narrow streets, and when people park illegally they compromise the safety of the entire development. I just don't understand why people only see the jerk calling the tow, not the person trying to make sure the emergency vehicles have access to our neighborhood. I just don't know if I have it in me to keep doing this! Can I just stop enforcing the rules so the other two have to step up?

Sharon - if you have a management company, let them do the actual calling. (I'm still confused as to how these people know it's YOU doing the calling.)

Be sure all residents know that their cars will be towed. Did they get this in wrting? Were they warned or issued a violation notice BEFORE the tow?

Also - isn't your local muncipality issuing tickets for road blockage? An emergency vehicle must have access down all roads.

Get out of this role ASAP. If need be, the board should hire a security person. If you are threatened, then notify the police. Document all incidences.

We do not have a management company. We have like 76 units and up to this point we have not seen a need for one. We have always done everything in house. So after this I am wondering if it seriously time to consider having one.

The first incident with the tow truck the guy confronted me about it. He asked who called the tow truck. I told him it was me. I thought it would be cowardly not to stand by my decision. However, now i am rethinking that to be a very unwise decision. That was a week ago.

The second incident with the tow truck I have NO idea how they knew it was me. I was out of town that weekend. I had residents calling me and telling me there was a mass amount of illegally parked cars from halloween parties. So I called my fellow directors to take care of it.. one wasn't home (at one of the parties) the other wasn't home at the time. When the first one got home he told me he knocked on each of the party houses and informed them they need to make sure their guests are not parked illegally. I still got more and more calls so I called the tow truck. The tow truck guy came.. told people to move.. The residents called the POLICE on the tow truck.. (mind you the tow truck NEVER towed anybody). So one would tend to think that the board member who knocked on the door would be the one blamed for the tow truck. NOPE.. somehow they knew it was me!!!! I was grateful the one board member knocked on the door, and was kind enough to inform them of illegally parking, but he refused to pull the trigger on the tow truck.

So now i am the jerk who apparently thinks they own the neighborhood.

Our official communication is through e-mail. We have informed the homeowners on multiple occasions not to park in certain places.. Also had a discussion on it at the annual meeting (2 weeks ago) . AND It is on the front page of our website. AND It was on our facebook page.

Sharon,

WE have signed posted throughout the community, posted at the mail kiosks, and letters have been sent to all residents. We have a tow company that makes several rounds a day(we don't have to call them) and yet when someone is towed they blame the board members.

BOARD MEMBERS always get blamed when members don't follow the rules.

I feel your frustration
Barbara
