Tonight at our annual meeting a homeowner informed us that her car was stolen two days ago in our community parking lot. We have also been getting vandalized a lot lately. So now we are trying to figure out what to do to keep our community safe.

Long story short.. Our builder went bankrupt. The township called in the securities and we are getting our common improvement done by the another company. The lights have not been installed. We are very very dark. The parking lot in particular has NO lighting whatsoever.

The areas where we need lights the most have no electric anywhere near there. The electric company is going to install the electric and the lights but they are SLOW.. It's been Months and it technically isn't my jurisdiction. Anywho we have been pressuring anyway.

So what do you do to keep your community safe?

We have started a community watch
Sent out warnings to our neighbors
Gone to local government meetings to express our concerns.
Pressuring electric company to install our lights. (looked into solar but we have been told they are not that functional)

If you have a community watch. What do you do during these meetings?

Thanks!

In today's modern world no matter where in the USA you live sooner or later crime appears. Sometimes it is the children of owners, sometimes it is an owner, sometimes it is a tenant, or a visitor doing the crime. Prevention is of course much smarter than figuring out who did it. From what you write you are on the right path with the lighting. However, I note a critical step may have been missed. Have someone from the HOA contact the local law enforcement agency (police, sheriff, constable, whichever) that responds to crimes in your area and invite them to the next meeting. Ask them to bring a list of incident types in the HOA area (see crime reports . com, it is possible the list for your area is already posted there). Having the list is a good first step to assessing the size and scope of the problem. Ask the assigned LEO rep what it is the HOA can do to reduce the number of incidents. It may be something like lighting, it may be something like alerts put in the newsletters, it may even be something like recommendations for landlords involving background checks for tenants. BTW, car theft is often a teenager. Looking at where the car was recovered may give a clue as to what the age of the thief was. I.e, found parked near a concert hall, back of the local HS, etc.

I like these. They text message or email you a photo using whatever sim card you pop in.

Ebay - "GSM security camera"

cheap security gaurd. if you see trouble, you can report it instantly or look at the images after the damage has happened and report it.
